US to take over Afghan mission
The United States is planning to take control of all military operations in Afghanistan next year with an Iraq-style troop surge after becoming frustrated at Nato’s failure to defeat the Taliban. Plans are being drawn up to send as many as 15,000 extra troops to Afghanistan with a single US general always in command, as in Iraq, defence sources said. The Pentagon is also pushing for a permanent “unified command” in the south of the country that would sideline the Dutch and the Canadians. At...

Zbigniew Brzezinski to be the real power behind an Obama throne
As the United States election race enters the final stretch, Barack Obama as the candidate promising change is revealing his true colours, much to the despair of anyone actually expecting any change. His recent call to declare Jerusalem the undivided capital of Israel, his denial of Palestinans’ right of return, and his support for a Bantustan Palestinian “state” which poses no threat to Israel show how completely he has caved in to the Zionist establishment on that issue. As President...

The Military-Industrial Complex
The Military-Industrial Complex by Chalmers Johnson and Tom Engelhardt TomDispatch To offer a bit of context for Chalmers Johnson’s latest post on the privatization of U.S. intelligence, it’s important to know just how lucrative that intelligence “business” has become. According to the latest estimate, the cumulative 2009 intelligence budget for the 16 agencies in the U.S. Intelligence Community will be more than $55 billion. However, it’s possible that the real figure...

Suicide hot line got calls from 22,000 veterans
More than 22,000 veterans have sought help from a special suicide hot line in its first year, and 1,221 suicides have been averted, the government says. According to a recent RAND Corp. study, roughly one in five soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan displays symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, putting them at a higher risk for suicide. Researchers at Portland State University found that male veterans are twice as likely to commit suicide than men who are not veterans. This month,...

Gravel: Take Bush to The Hague
Former Democratic candidate Mike Gravel says President George W. Bush should be taken to The Hague for war crimes rather than being impeached. In a Monday video conference with Press TV, the former Alaska senator said President Bush does not ‘deserve’ to be impeached for invading Afghanistan and Iraq, which has resulted in the loss of ‘millions of lives’. “An Impeachment just means you would only take away his (Bush’s) presidency. Well, he is almost done (with)...

Candidates’ Terror Policies Tough To Distinguish
Morning Edition, July 18, 2008 · U.S. elections since Sept. 11, 2001, have featured many debates about terrorism and how to counter it. This year, Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama have had sharp exchanges over the issue, with each accusing the other of taking the wrong approach. Given that McCain consistently polls better than Obama on the question of how to fight terrorism, it is in McCain’s interest to highlight the policy differences he has with Obama. But there aren’t...

Earlier, US forces admitted killing eight civilians in a neighbouring province - the latest in a series of bombing incidents involving civilians. ‘Prisoners’ The first reports...

Is Dubya an Agent of the New World Order?
“Out of these troubled times, our…objective can emerge–’a New World Order.’” - George Bush, Sr., Dubya’s Daddy When you mention the word “conspiracy” to explain a situation, most people tune you right out. They think you’re a whack-oh. Yet, the U.S. Congress, as dumb as it is, subscribes to the proposition that there is such a thing. After the Civil War, it passed a law, the Sherman Anti-Trust Act, to make it a crime for two or more individuals to agree to fix the price...
